Krisen är helt framprovocerad och har ingenting med några nya ekonomiska problem att göra.

Istället är det en bitter strid mellan president Obamas demokrater och högerfalangen inom republikanerna som hotar världsekonomin.

Det så kallade budgetstupet är en tvåstegsraket där steg ett skjuts upp i dag.

Republikanerna försöker utöva utpressning mot Obama. Antingen går Obama och demokraterna med på att stoppa pengarna till Obamas sjukvårdsförsäkring annars så tvingar republikanerna fram en stängning av stora delar av statsapparaten från och med tisdag.

Då tvingas alla federala myndigheter att stänga. Personalen skickas hem. Vilket givetvis skapar rader av stora som små problem för vanliga amerikaner. Senast detta hände var 1996 när Bill Clinton var president.

Höga insatser

Obamacare, den amerikanska varianten av allmän sjukförsäkring, är redan lag. En sjukförsäkring som omfattar även de fattiga var Obamas främsta vallöfte 2008. Den har antagits av kongressen och Obama har sedan dess dessutom vunnit ännu ett presidentval.

Ändå tycker vissa republikaner att det är helt ok att stoppa eller försena införandet av lagen genom att koppla den till antagandet av statsbudgeten.

Just nu pågår ett avancerat politiskt spel med mycket höga insatser i den amerikanska kongressen. Republikanerna har majoriteten i representanthuset medan demokraterna behärskar den mäktigare senaten. Istället för att försöka förhandla fram en kompromiss gräver båda sidor ner sig i sina skyttegravar. Harry Reid, demokraternas ledare höll senaten stängd under helgen för att öka trycket på republikanerna.

Tiden är nu så knapp att det är svårt att se något sätt att undvika en stängning av statsapparaten.

Säkrast i världen

Steg ett är illa nog eftersom det sker i ett bräckligt ekonomiskt läge där den amerikanska ekonomin precis är på väg att återhämta sig.

Ändå är det bara uppvärmning för den verkliga striden.

Steg två innebär att republikanerna vägrar höja taket för hur mycket pengar USA får låna. I praktiken innebär det att USA inte längre kan betala sina skulder. Vilket vore något oerhört.

Amerikanska statsobligationer betraktas som de säkraste i världen.

– Att USA alltid betalar sina skulder är det fundament på vilket hela världsekonomin vilar, skriver ekonomiprofessorn och Nobelpristagaren Paul Krugman i New York Times.

Han och många med honom förutspår skrämmande konsekvenser om USA inte längre kan betala.

– Men det verkar som Tea party-republikanerna inte riktigt förstår det eller så bryr de sig helt enkelt inte.

Avfärdar vetenskapen

Det är samma personer som avfärdar de vetenskapliga bevisen för att människan ligger bakom klimatförändringen.

– Så vad finns det för anledning att tro att de kommer att tro på experternas varningar om faran med att ställa in betalningarna, undrar Krugman.

USA:s finansminster har satt den 17 oktober som deadline för när landet måste ta nya lån.

Det finns republikaner i kongressen som varnar för att vad deras partikamrater håller på med är politiskt självmord. Amerikanska folket kommer att ge republikanerna skulden för det kaos som uppstår. Men en majoritet av partiets kongressmän vågar inte gå emot av rädsla för att deras konservativa väljare ska straffa dem efter nästa val.

USA:s politiska system med "checks and balances" bygger på att partierna kompromissar. När de inte gör det så havererar systemet. Landet blir omöjligt att styra. Vilket är precis vad som håller på att hända.

Samma personer som amerikanska folket valt för att sköta landet saboterar processen till den grad att beslutsfattande paralyseras.

Och på köpet drar de världsekonomin med sig mot avgrunden.

Republicans in the U.S. Congress are prepared to close the state apparatus and plunge the country into bankruptcy.

Experts warn that the consequences could be worse than after the Lehman Brothers bankruptcy in 2008.

The crisis is totally provoked , and have nothing to do with any new financial problems to do.

Instead, it's a bitter battle between President Obama's Democrats and the right wing of the Republicans that threatens the world economy.

The so-called financial precipice is a two-stage step where a postponement today.

The Republicans are trying to blackmail Obama. Either Obama and the Democrats agreed to put the money to Obama's health insurance usually forces the Republicans until the closure of large parts of the state apparatus from Tuesday .

Instead of trying to negotiate a compromise both sides dig down in their trenches . Harry Reid, Democratic Senate leaders held closed over the weekend to increase pressure on Republicans.

The time is now so scarce that it is difficult to see any way to avoid the closure of the state apparatus.
Safest in the world

Step one is bad enough as it is in a fragile economic situation, where the U.S. economy is just about to recover.

Yet it is only heating for the actual battle .

Step two involves the Republicans refuse to raise the ceiling on the amount of money the U.S. can borrow . In practice this means that the U.S. can no longer pay their debts. What would be something tremendous .

U.S. Treasury bonds are considered as the safest in the world.

- The United States always pays its debts, it is the foundation on which the entire world economy rests , writes economics professor and Nobel laureate Paul Krugman in the New York Times.

He and several others predict terrifying consequences if the U.S. can no longer pay .

- But it seems like the Tea Party , the Republicans do not really understand it , or do they simply did not .

These are the same people who dismiss the scientific evidence that man is behind climate change.

- So what are the reasons to believe that they will believe the experts' warnings about the danger of default on payments , wondering Krugman .

There are Republicans in Congress who warn that what their comrades are doing is political suicide . The American people will give Republicans blame for the chaos that arises. But a majority of the party's Congressmen dare not go against the fear that their conservative voters will punish them after the next election .

U.S. political system of " checks and balances" is based on the parties compromise . When they do not, it breaks down the system. It becomes impossible to control . Which is exactly what is happening .

The same people that American people elected to run the country sabotaging the process to the point of decision-making paralysis .

And in the bargain draws the world economy toward the abyss.
